I saw a post recently on Facebook where a hair stylist revealed that a lot of the shampoos that we all use are actually damaging our hair instead of doing the positive things that they state they can do. This obviously concerned and worried me as of course, we all want healthy, shiny hair and how are we able to tell whether a product could be really damaging to our locks? Therefore, I decided to do some research on the ingredients that may cause damage so that you can make a more informed decision when next purchasing some hair care treats.
Sulfates can help to remove dirt and oil from your hair. However, sulfates can actually damage your hair as it’s so good at cleaning it actually over-cleans and can strip your hair of its necessary natural oils. As a result, your skin and scalp may become more sensitive and your hair can become dry and brittle. Ethanol Alcohol, Ethyl Alcohol, Isopropanol Alcohol, Propyl Alcohol, Isopropyl Alcohol and SD Alcohol are also known to do this.
Parabens are preservatives that help stall the growth of bacteria. They are believed to enter your body through your skin and disrupt hormone function by mimicking the estrogen in your body. They are however considered to be safe to use by the FDA despite the negative health issues that can be caused by this.
Mineral Oil and Petroleum
These products coat your hair and scalp so effectively, they can suffocate them. These ingredients can cause acne, hindered skin respiration, imbalanced oil levels in your scalp, and skin irritation.
Silicones may create the illusion of healthy hair by coating the hair shaft to make it appear smooth and shiny. Unfortunately, they also coat the scalp, clogging your pores and drying out your hair.
Diethanolamine and Triethanolamine
These ingredients have been known to destroy important components of your hair such as the keratin, making your hair dry, brittle, and lifeless.
This ingredient is included in shampoos as a thickening agent. It strips hair and skin of their natural moisture.
